The bowls are turned green and carefully dried often allowing for natural distortions and checking. I experiment with non traditional forms and changing the grain orientation. The crotch of the tree offers spectacular grain patterns and by making use of the natural live edge lends to irregular shapes. After the bowl is turned I will often use a torch to help dry the surface and add color or texture. I finish the bowls with a mixture of oils, oil varnishes and waxes. The finishes are food safe.
The trees are all locally sourced either from tree services, home owners, or farmers needing to get rid of dead or storm damaged trees destined for the landfill or fireplace. I frequently will pull off the road to investigate down trees in peoples yards.
